Intagra is a sildenafil medicine used for erectile dysfunction in adult men. It is intended for men who have difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection. By blocking PDE5, it supports penile blood-flow changes during sexual stimulation.

Description

Intagra is an oral sildenafil tablet for erectile dysfunction in adult men. It is intended for men who have difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection adequate for sexual activity. Sildenafil blocks PDE5, helping penile blood vessels relax during sexual stimulation.

Composition

Intagra contains sildenafil, a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor, or PDE5 inhibitor.

Sildenafil citrate is the pharmaceutical salt form of sildenafil used in Intagra tablets.

Dosage and usage

Intagra is supplied as oral tablets. The prescribed strength is selected according to treatment response, age, other medicines, and liver or kidney function.

Doctors often start conservatively in men who are older, who use interacting medicines, or who have reduced clearance of sildenafil. A higher strength does not guarantee a better erection. It can raise the chance of headache, flushing, dizziness, and visual symptoms.

Tablets should be swallowed whole with water. Do not split, crush, or chew a tablet unless this has been specifically advised for the prescribed product. Altering a tablet can make timing less predictable and may result in taking an unintended amount.

Plan the dose around the intended time of sexual activity, rather than taking it after difficulties have already started. Sildenafil needs time to absorb.

Take Intagra by mouth around 30 to 60 minutes before planned sexual activity. The medicine can be taken with water, with or without food, though a high-fat meal may delay the effect.

Use no more than one prescribed dose within 24 hours. Do not take an extra tablet because the first one did not work quickly enough. Give sildenafil time to absorb and remember that arousal is required.

If a dose is missed, there is usually nothing to make up because sildenafil for erectile dysfunction is taken when needed. Do not double a dose later.

A quieter setting, adequate time for stimulation, and limiting alcohol can make a practical difference.

How it works

Sildenafil supports the body’s normal erection response. Sexual stimulation remains necessary. Intagra does not create sexual desire and does not cause an automatic erection.

PDE5 is an enzyme that breaks down cyclic guanosine monophosphate, known as cGMP. During arousal, cGMP helps smooth muscle in penile blood vessels relax. By slowing cGMP breakdown, sildenafil can increase blood flow to erectile tissue and make an erection easier to achieve and maintain [1].

Once absorbed, sildenafil acts mainly in the penis during sexual stimulation, where nitric oxide has already started the cGMP pathway.

The medicine is selective for PDE5, though it can also affect related enzymes to a small degree.

Indications

Intagra is intended for men who have difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection adequate for sexual activity.

Erectile dysfunction can involve reduced penile blood flow, nerve signalling changes, diabetes, vascular disease, stress, medication effects, or a combination of factors.

Comparison

PDE5 inhibitors have the same broad goal: they improve erectile response by supporting blood flow during sexual stimulation. Their timing and duration differ, so the best fit often depends on how spontaneous a person wants sexual activity to be.

Active ingredient Typical timing and duration Clinical profile
Sildenafil Usually 30–60 minutes; about 4 hours Well-established option for planned sexual activity
Tadalafil Often 30–60 minutes; up to 36 hours Longer window, with more potential for back or muscle aches
Avanafil or vardenafil Often begins within 15–60 minutes; several hours Alternative PDE5 inhibitors with different timing and interaction considerations

Sildenafil has a relatively defined treatment window. Tadalafil remains active much longer, which some men prefer, though a longer duration also means adverse effects may last longer. Avanafil may have a faster onset for some users. Vardenafil requires extra caution in people with certain heart-rhythm conditions.

The European Association of Urology places PDE5 inhibitors among first-line pharmacological options for erectile dysfunction when nitrates and other major contraindications are absent [2].

Contraindications

  • concomitant use of nitrates for angina or chest pain, including glyceryl trinitrate, isosorbide mononitrate, or isosorbide dinitrate;
  • concomitant use of riociguat;
  • unstable cardiovascular disease where sexual activity has been medically discouraged;
  • severe low blood pressure or uncontrolled high blood pressure;
  • severe liver impairment;
  • significant kidney impairment;
  • a history of non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy;
  • retinitis pigmentosa;
  • penile curvature, Peyronie’s disease, sickle-cell disease, leukaemia, or multiple myeloma;
  • concomitant medicines called alpha-blockers, which can increase dizziness or fainting risk;
  • strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, including ritonavir, cobicistat, ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, and erythromycin, require medical review because they can increase sildenafil exposure.

The EMA product information for sildenafil lists nitrate use and riociguat treatment as major contraindications and describes the cardiovascular precautions associated with PDE5 inhibition [3].

When this is not for you

Intagra is not suitable if you use nitrate medicines for angina or chest pain, such as glyceryl trinitrate or isosorbide medicines. Do not use it with riociguat. If a clinician has told you to avoid sexual activity because of unstable heart disease, your cardiac condition should be assessed before using sildenafil.

Side effects

Most adverse effects from sildenafil are mild and temporary. Headache is one of the most common. Flushing, blocked nose, indigestion, dizziness, and facial warmth can also occur. The likelihood tends to rise with higher doses. Reviewing the dose with a prescriber can help balance benefit and tolerability.

Temporary visual effects may include blurred vision, increased sensitivity to light, or a blue-green tint. These symptoms usually settle as the medicine leaves the body. Sudden vision loss is rare, yet it needs urgent medical assessment.

Less common effects include palpitations, low blood pressure, rash, vomiting, or prolonged erection. Priapism means an erection lasting more than four hours. It is an emergency because delayed treatment can damage penile tissue.

Stop sexual activity and seek urgent medical care for chest pain, fainting, sudden hearing loss, severe breathlessness, or an erection lasting over four hours. Do not use nitrate medicine for chest pain after taking sildenafil.

A mild headache may respond to water, rest, and a simple pain reliever that is suitable for you. Avoid adding nitrate sprays or tablets for chest discomfort after sildenafil.

Alcohol can worsen dizziness, flushing, low blood pressure, and erection difficulties. Large amounts may make Intagra seem less helpful even when the dose itself was appropriate.

Grapefruit can also raise sildenafil levels in some people.

Common mistakes

Several avoidable mistakes account for disappointing results or unnecessary side effects.

  • Taking the tablet immediately before sex and expecting an instant result.
  • Taking it after a very heavy meal, then assuming the medicine has failed.
  • Using more than one dose in a day.
  • Combining sildenafil with nitrate medication or recreational nitrite products.
  • Expecting an erection without sexual stimulation.
  • Drinking heavily before sexual activity.
  • Forgetting to mention alpha-blockers, blood-pressure medicines, antiviral therapy, or antifungal treatment.
  • Continuing sexual activity despite chest pain, severe dizziness, or breathlessness.
If sildenafil caused facial flushing or a blocked nose but gave a satisfactory erection, taking more next time is unlikely to improve the benefit and may intensify those same effects.

What doctors say

In clinical practice, doctors often treat erectile dysfunction as a health signal rather than an isolated bedroom problem. High blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, depression, and some medicines can all contribute to reduced erectile function.

Sildenafil is frequently chosen because its onset is familiar and its duration suits planned use. It works well for many men, yet it cannot overcome every cause of erectile dysfunction. Severe nerve injury, advanced diabetes, marked vascular disease, and untreated low testosterone may limit response.

A doctor will usually focus on two questions: whether sexual activity is medically appropriate, and whether the man uses medicines that could interact with sildenafil. The WHO recognises sexual health as part of physical and emotional wellbeing, while clinical erectile dysfunction assessment also considers cardiovascular risk factors [4].

One poor experience does not always mean the treatment is unsuitable. Timing, meal size, alcohol, anxiety, and inadequate stimulation are common explanations for an inconsistent first attempt.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Intagra usually take to work?

Sildenafil often starts working within 30 to 60 minutes after swallowing. A fatty meal may slow absorption and delay the effect. The FDA prescribing information describes sildenafil as an on-demand PDE5 inhibitor whose effect depends on sexual stimulation and individual response [5].

How long can the effect of Intagra last?

For many men, the useful window is around four hours. This does not mean an erection lasts four hours; it means erections may be easier to achieve during that period when arousal occurs. The FDA's 2023 prescribing information also describes individual variation in response. Duration can feel shorter after a large meal, alcohol use, or significant anxiety.

Can Intagra be taken with food?

Intagra can be taken with or without food. A light meal is less likely to delay onset than a high-fat meal. The EMA's 2018 sildenafil product information describes food-related delays in absorption, which is why planned timing is more useful than taking it at the last minute.

Can Intagra be used with alcohol?

Small amounts of alcohol may not prevent sildenafil from working, though alcohol itself can reduce erectile function. Larger amounts increase the likelihood of dizziness, low blood pressure, headache, and poor sexual performance. The WHO's 2010 sexual-health framework recognises factors that can affect cardiovascular and sexual health, including alcohol use.

Who should avoid Intagra completely?

Men taking nitrates or riociguat must not use sildenafil. It should also be avoided when a clinician has advised against sexual activity because of unstable heart disease. The FDA's 2023 prescribing information calls for careful review of cardiovascular history and interacting medicines before PDE5 inhibitor treatment.

Does Intagra increase sexual desire?

No. Intagra improves blood-flow signalling involved in erection, but it does not increase libido. Low desire can relate to stress, relationship factors, depression, low testosterone, illness, or medication effects. The European Association of Urology's 2025 guidance separates libido assessment from erection-focused treatment in erectile dysfunction care.

I took it about an hour before dinner plans and avoided a heavy meal. The response was reliable after that. I had a warm face and mild headache the first time, but it passed by the next morning.

The first attempt felt disappointing because I took it after a large late meal. On another evening I took it earlier and it worked much better. I learned that timing made more difference than I expected.

It helped with firmness, but I had nasal congestion and flushing. The effect was useful, though I did not like taking it after alcohol because I felt light-headed.

I had used prostate medication before, so I discussed the timing with my prescriber first. I did not have dizziness, and the tablet gave me a predictable window without needing an all-day effect.
